After trailing till 35km, the Tanzanians made the move and Patrick bettered the course record with an incredible 2:13:06 while Revellian, a regular participant at Pune marathon, was just a second behind the winner. Kenya’s Benson Kipkosgei, fifth at Pune last year, finished third here with yet another PB of 2:13:54.

She was running neck-to-neck with the runners from Africa until 10 km when Helen Musyoka break away from the bunch and start running upfront with a lead of 100m. Musyoka is familiar on the Indian roads and credited with a career best 70:50 at Pune, last year. However she managed to clock only 71:27 today but remained satisfied with setting a new course record for Nagpur. “I am happy with the timing. At the end there were lot of crowd blocking the way hence I lost my rhythm, otherwise I could have improved my timing” was his reaction after the race.

Former Indian cricket captain and Member of Parliament Mr. Mohd Azarudeen gave away the prizes to the winners. Patrick Nyangelo received INR 250,000 while Musyoka went home with INR 150,000 prize purse for their efforts.

Lunkoi Bining- 1st INDIAN AT MUMBAI MARATHON 2010: (Sean Wallace)New comers took Mumbai Marathon titles, Bining first among Indians
Mumbai, India – 17 Jan 2010: Running on a new course and in relatively hot climate, the defending champions and top gunners went unnoticed as new faces took over the prime spots in Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon here on Sunday.

David Tarus, last year’s runner-up and billed as a top contender to win the race this time following the absence of defending champion Kenneth Mungara, led the runners briefly but had problem in keeping the pace as the group passed Atria Mall and approached towards Worli. He fell behind, as also the pacer Simon Munyutu, a French citizen with African origin as the runners took a turn in that point. Another pace-setter, Simon Kasimli of Kenya did the front running and was leading compatriot Denis Ndiso, Ethipions Gebo Burka and Haile Demissie at the half-way mark. Having finished his responsibilities, Kasimli was trailing behind after Bandra reclamation and allowed the trio to take over.  There was a second group which includes Kenyans Samson Limareng, Matthew Kibowen and Jonathan Kibet along  with Ethiopians Siraj Amda Bene and Fekadu Kedir running behind the leaders and prepared to take over. At 30 Km, Limareng and Amda Bene moved ahead and joined the leaders. As the runners approached towards the newly opened Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, only Ndiso and Burka were on the fray for the top spot as they left others at a distance. Once at the Sea Link, Ndiso made the “kick” and did the solo run towards finish as Burka dropped out.  Denis Ndiso went on to achieve his maiden win in marathon with a career best 2:12:34 as Amda Bene came from behind to take the second place at 2:13:58 which halted a chance for Kenyan sweep at men’s race. Limareng and Kibet finished behind the Ethiopian for third and fourth places respectively.

Ethiopians swept the women’s race

If Kenyans are dominating the men’s scene, the Ethiopian women ruled the roads of Mumbai for the third year in succession. Three times victor Mulu Seboka and defending champion Haile Kebebush led a group of dozen Ethiopian runners from the start. The women gave better hopes than men in terms of performance as there were a host of athletes with better timings entered the fray this year. But heat and humidity slowed them a bit as they started behind the men. Seboka had some high hopes at the beginning as she had experience on the course and Kebebush was right on her shoulders to challenge and achieve good results. Quite interestingly the leading group includes two time global medalist Bizunesh Mohammed Urgesa as well. Bizunesh, the world junior silver medalist in 3000m in 2008 and a world youth bronze medalist over 1500m five years ago, held off the challenge from her senior compatriots as she try to remain in the bunch throughout the race. Firehiwot Dado Tufa, last year’s Rome Marathon champion along with Azalech Masresha, the ninth place finisher in Paris last year were threatened to charge the trio as they approached half-way. The five made a formidable group but Seboka and Tufa have become tired as the heat took its toll at their return-journey. Bizunesh and Kebebush were running shoulder to shoulder at the final stages of the race to make it more interesting for those who watch them on Television and along the roadside. The guessing-game ends sooner as Bizunesh (20), touch the tape just two seconds before Kebebush to become victor.

The winners in both men and women sections have become richer by USD 35,000 as the total prize money went to top-12 finishers in marathon and top-5 in half-marathon. There were also special incentives to top Indian finishers in all categories. The organizers used to run a Veterans’ race, Dream Run and a Wheelchair event simultaneously with the Mumbai Marathon. The 6 km Dream Run witnessed 20,541 participants and include many celebrities of the Indian metropolis. (Ram. Murali Krishnan)

Mumbai, Jan 15, 2010: Strong Women’s filed set to eclipse Mumbai marathon record

Three times winner and course record-holder Mulu Seboka is back here to win the 7th Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday (17). Her Ethiopian compatriot Haile Kebebush, the defending champion, is all set to challenge her as the elite women’s field has names that of some truly fast runners from elsewhere in the World. The Ethiopians fielded just over two dozen women athletes to keep their winning tradition alive. However it would not be an easy task for them as an array of good runners from other parts of the World are also in the fray for the Sunday’s race.

The winner of Nairobi edition of “Greatest Race on Earth” series, Irene Jerotich, along with runner-up Alice Nyerechi Chelagat led the challenge from Kenya. Chelagat had a personal best 2:27:29 while finishing fifth at Dubai in 2008. She was a bit slower than Jerotich at Nairobi, but given ideal conditions she could dip better timings this time around. These are not the only athletes credited with fast performances as Russia’s Natalya Volgina, the second-place finisher at Paris three years ago with a career best 2:27:32 and last year’s Rome marathon champion Firehiwot Dado Tufa of Ethiopia with an impressive 2:27:08 would make it intensive on the women’s side. There are also some debutant runners which includes former Kenyan world junior silver medalist in 1500m, Rose Kosgei, joins the others to put things unpredictable.

Tarus ready for the big day

With defending champion Kenneth Mungara opted to out owing to an injury, the 2009 runner-up David Kiptui Tarus of Kenya is all set to take over the men’s race if things are went as planned. But the men’s line-up has three East European runners who would like to give the Kenyan runners a run for their money. Russian national record-holder Aleksey V. Sokolov (2:09:07), the victor in Dublin marathon 2007 together with Ukraine’s Oleksandr Kuzin (2:07:33) and Yuriy Hychun (2:10:59) posed a real threat to the Africans. However, Tarus have some teammates like Daniel Kiprugut (2:08:38), Henry Cherono and Luka Chelimo to tackle the situation on the Mumbai roads.

Increase in prize money boosts athletes

The organisers have increased the prize money this year by around 25 percent to USD 310,000. The winners in men and women divisions take home USD 35,000 each as the prize money runs down to top-12 runners, as against the ten who got it in the past six years. “The increase in prize money is necessitated following the growing number of elite participation and further recognition to Mumbai with a Gold label by the IAAF”, the organisers revealed. Indian winners will also get enhance cash awards this year.

This year’s race is significant as the course now proudly includes the newly opened Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, a 5.6 km stretch over sea which bridges Worli and Bandra.

Decathlete and triple World champion Dan O’Brien is the brand ambassador for this year’s Mumbai Marathon. O’Brien (43), the multi-event specialist and now a popular television commentator is eager to meet young sporting aspirants on the Indian city to spread the word of goodwill and promote the sport to new horizons.
